KCRW's "Global Street Food" Event May 1
Santa Monica's streets are full of eclectic food and people from all over the globe. You can dine on Indian cuisine, British pub food, Spanish-style tapas or Japanese bites all in the same block - and that's not counting all the gourmet food trucks that have been hitting the streets. With so much diversity found in our food these days, it's no wonder KCRW and SMC Associates have teamed up to present an event dedicated to global street food on May 1 at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
The three-hour "Global Street Food" event will feature KCRW's Good Food host Evan Kleiman discussing how street food can shape the culture of a city and influence what we eat. "Street Food embodies all that's great about a culture," says Evan Kleiman. "It's emblematic of a people's desires, of their favorite flavor palates, feeds them well and is often low cost." Kleiman will be joined by panelist, The OC Weekly's and "Ask a Mexican" columnist Gustavo Arellano and Chef Jet Tila, who owns Wazuzu at the Wynn Encore in Las Vegas. Other guest from around the globe will be showcased via Skype, including international food journalists Lesley Téllez live from Mexico and Robyn Eckhardt who leads street food and photography tours in Chiang Mai, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. "It's no wonder that chefs and adventurous travelers of all kinds hit the streets to feed their brain and connect with a country's food culture," Kleiman goes on to say. "That's what we want to do at The Broad Stage; we'll feed our minds and tantalize our tummies.Thank goodness they'll be a selection of LA old and new truck traditions waiting for us to sate our appetites."
After the discussion, guests will get to sample an array of international street food favorites from some of L.A.'s best food trucks, including Mexican dishes from Mariscos Jalisco, hot dogs topped with homemade pickles and onions from Let's Be Frank, India Jones' “authentic-as-it-gets” gourmet Indian street food, Argentine classics from Piaggio Gourmet on Wheels and the Nom Nom Truck's Banh mi Vietnamese sandwiches - all while listening to the Masanga Marimba Ensemble perform music from Zimbabwe and Latin America.
