Vegetarian Cuban Sandwich

Usually vegetarians are stuck to one option when it comes to ordering deli sandwiches - the veggie. This sandwich comes in many forms, but usually consists of lettuce, tomatoes, marinated artichokes or eggplant, cucumbers and cheese (if you're not vegan). And it can be good, but it could be even better if vegetarians were allowed to experience the same meaty sandwiches we love like BLTs, clubs, reubans - at their local deli.

Okay, not every deil is going to serve vegetarian meats like Smart Deli ham, turkey and pepperoni, so, in the meantime you're just going to have to make your own versions at home. Try out a favorite from the Vegatarian Times.

Cuban Sandwich

  • Cuban bread (similar to French or Italian bread; or make your own)
  • yellow mustard, to taste
  • dill pickle slices
  • 2 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 3-4 slices of vegetarian ham (like Smart Deli)
  • butter


Layer mustard, pickles, cheese, ham slices, second slice of cheese on Cuban bread. Spread butter on both sides of the outside of the sandwich. Spray cooking spray on skillet and heat on medium-high. Put the sandwich in the skillet and top with heavy iron pan. Cook about 4 or 5 minutes on each side.
